BUNKER RUN
🔥 Liberation Trail ‘On Tour’ – Bunker Run in IJmuiden 🔥

Today, beginning of february, marked the very first Liberation Trail ‘On Tour’, a special edition of the Liberation Trail where we combined a historic trail run with a deeper dive into history. Altough this area is not part of the full Liberation Trail, the route stands for our core values; trail running, historic perpective and stunning nature. This time, we ran through the rugged dunes and along the beaches of IJmuiden and the Kennemerduinen, passing the impressive bunkers of the Atlantikwall.

Running Through History

The route took us through one of the most heavily fortified areas in the Netherlands during World War II: Festung IJmuiden. This was a crucial part of the Atlantikwall, the German defensive line built along the European coast to prevent an Allied invasion. The remnants of these fortifications – bunkers, tunnels, and observation posts – still serve as a powerful reminder of that dark Nazi period. During the run, we paused at key moments to reflect on this history while also embracing the physical challenge of the terrain.

International Participation & Trail Vibes

What made this edition even more special was the diversity of participants. In addition to runners from the Netherlands and Belgium, we also welcomed participants from Italy and Romania. A great confirmation that the Liberation Trail’s mission – combining sport and history – is resonating with more and more people.

With a mix of steep dunes, soft sand, beach sections, and old bunkers, this was a true trail running experience. The conditions were perfect: a fresh breeze, clear blue skies, and a trail crew full of enthusiasm.

Tradition: Stroopwafels and Beer

Afterwards, we wrapped up the event in true Liberation Trail style: stroopwafels and a cold beer. Because after a tough run, you deserve to celebrate. Conversations continued, new friendships were formed, and plans for the next Liberation Trail ‘On Tour’ were already in the making.

What’s Next?

After this successful first edition, we’re looking ahead to the next Liberation Trail ‘On Tour’. The next stop? A Recon Run of the final stretch of the long stage – 81 km – in june from Mook to Groesbeek. Once again, a route filled with history, stunning landscapes, and a strong community of runners who don’t just run, but also remember.
