Embark on a Historic Journey: The Liberation Trail’s 6 Stages

Join us for an unforgettable journey through history as we traverse the six stages of the Liberation Trail, a poignant tribute to the heroes of World War II. Here’s a glimpse into our agenda and the distances covered each day:

Sunday: Arrival in Normandy, France

On our first day, we’ll arrive on the campsite Ferme HayDay in Normandy, France, the hallowed ground where the Allies launched their historic D-Day invasion. As we settle in, anticipation builds for the transformative experiences that lie ahead.

Monday: Remembering Sacrifice

Today, we pay our tribute at the super impressive US and German war cemeteries, solemnly reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who fought on both sides. The US cemetery is known by Steven Spielbergโ€™s stunning movie โ€˜Saving Private Ryanโ€™, with the 10.000 white crosses. Our prologue takes us along the iconic Omaha Beach before we set off on our journey, heading towards our campsite.

Tuesday: Exploring Normandy (49km)

Our trail through Normandy encompasses 49 kilometers of rugged terrain, with 80% of the route winding through scenic trails. Close your eyes and envision the tranquil scene before you, contrasting sharply with the violence that once engulfed this very spot on the 6th of June, 1944โ€ฆ As you follow the winding path along Omaha Beach, they were struck by the towering cliffs that framed the coastline. Carved by time and tide, these rugged sentinels bore witness to the bravery of those who once scaled their heights. Run next to remnants of bunkers and rusting metal dotted the landscape at Gold, Juno and Sword beach. And as the sun dipped low, casting a golden hue upon the cliffs, they couldn’t help but feel a profound connection to the past and a deep sense of gratitude for the sacrifices made for freedom.

Wednesday: Continuing Through France (45km)

As we venture deeper into France, our journey continues with a 45-kilometer stretch, 30% of which leads us through captivating trails. Today’s journey begins at Pegasus Bridge in Bรฉnouville, heading east towards Caen. After passing through the city, we’ll be treated to stunning landscapes. The French refer to this region as the โ€˜Swiss Normande.โ€™ What refers to this picturesque region known for its rolling hills and scenic beauty, reminiscent of the Swiss countryside.

Thursday: Into the Ardennes (ยฑ15km) โ€“ Night Trail

Under the cover of darkness, we embark on a ยฑ15-kilometer night trail through the Ardennes, where 95% of our path is illuminated only by moonlight and stars. This immersive experience allows us to connect with the history of the region in a uniquely intimate way. Good to know: the start of the night trail is at the beloved vertical K!

Friday: Through the Ardennes (29km)

Our journey through the Ardennes continues with a 29-kilometer trek, where once again, 95% of our route leads us along rugged trails. Surrounded by dense forests and steep hills, we pass the Tiger tank next to the La Gleize museum. This is the terrain of the Battle of the Bulge, but now without snow and hopefully less cold.

Saturday: Across the Netherlands (81km)

In the Netherlands, we embark on an 81-kilometer journey, with 70% of our path winding through scenic trails. As we traverse the Dutch countryside, we run on the Market Garden route of โ€˜Hellโ€™s Highwayโ€™. The Long stage: An 81 km journey starting from Best, near Eindhoven, passing through Sint Oedenrode, Veghel, and Grave, then tracing the riverbanks of the Meuse to Mook and the Duivelsberg. It’s a beautiful stage but also grueling and challenging! Once you’ve completed it, only one marathon remains..

Sunday: Arnhem and Beyond (ยฑ44km)

Our final day takes us on a ยฑ44-kilometer loop around Arnhem in the Netherlands, where 95% of our route follows picturesque trails. As we conclude our journey, we carry with us the memories of the British Airborne heroes who fought from the Ginkel Heath, where we start, next to Oosterbeek and finish at the John Frost Bridge in the citycentre of Arnhem.
