THE GROESBEEK HEIGHTS – JIM GAVIN AND THE 82ND AIRBORNE IN OPERATION MARKET GARDEN

During Stage 5 of the Liberation Trail, we didn’t just follow in the footsteps of runners – we followed in the footsteps of heroes. The Groesbeek Heights, a key objective during Operation Market Garden, were defended by the 82nd Airborne Division under Major General James “Jumpin’ Jim” Gavin.

Dropped on September 17th, 1944, the 82nd Airborne was tasked with capturing key bridges and securing the high ground around Groesbeek. These heights were vital to preventing German counterattacks and protecting the southern flank of the operation.

General Gavin, known for leading from the front and for literally jumping with his men, orchestrated the defense of these wooded ridges with relentless energy. His paratroopers held the line under extreme pressure, limited supplies, and fierce enemy resistance.

Today, runners on the Liberation Trail covered the same terrain – from the wide-open fields of Mook to the steep climbs of Berg en Dal and Groesbeek. It was a hot, suffocating day, with every 10 km marked by a water station – but no one gave up. That spirit, echoing the grit of the 82nd Airborne, was tangible in every step.

“They held the heights. We honor their courage – by running them.”
