REMEMBRANCE DAY | 4 MAY 🇳🇱

Freedom is not free.

Every year on the 4th of May, the Netherlands observes Remembrance Day (Dodenherdenking). At 8 PM, the entire country falls silent for two minutes. In homes, on the streets, in public squares and train stations—people pause to honor the memory of all civilians and soldiers who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the beginning of World War II.

It’s a moment that transcends generations. A solemn reflection not only on the cost of war, but on the value of peace. We remember the resistance fighters, the victims of persecution, the fallen liberators from across the world, and all those who gave their lives in the fight against tyranny.

At the Liberation Trail, we carry this remembrance forward in a unique way—on foot, across the very ground where history happened. We run the trail not just as athletes, but as witnesses. Every step we take traces a path of sacrifice, struggle, and ultimately: liberation.

By running these trails, we keep the stories alive.
We honor the past by moving through it.
We remember through motion—through effort—through silence and sweat.

Because remembrance is more than looking back.
It’s making sure the flame stays lit.
That we pass it on.

So on this day, we invite you to pause.
To remember.
And to keep moving forward—with purpose.
